Extend Your Hunting Distance with a Vortex VMX-3T Magnifier

Red dot sights for civilian use usually have a fixed magnification.

If you encounter a red dot sight with a variable magnification, it’s likely a military-grade equipment.

Such sights can be a bit pricey; hence, out of reach for the many.

But you don’t need all those features and ranges if you are a hunter.

What you need is an affordable and simple sight that maximizes your shooting range and cartridge.

More than that, you need to acquire targets easily and fast. No need to waste money on extra ranges and features you don’t need.

A Vortex red dot with a fixed magnification at 1x plus a magnifier make for a very useful and cost-effective hunting equipment. Vortex VMX-3T magnifier is exactly what you need.

You benefit from a longer-range distance, fully multi-coated optics, a wider field of view at the range, and water- and shock-resistant chassis.

And a longer-range means less chance of a target discovering your hideout.

Needn’t we say that the anodized chassis removes glares and reflections, reducing chances of blowing your cover?

Best of all, optics won’t become foggy when temperatures change.

All of these amazing features you get with a price of less than $200!

Vortex VMX-3T Magnifier with Flip Mount
  • The VMX-3T Magnifier and Flip Mount combo adds a 3x magnification to your rifle's red dot sight. Simple, fast, and effective, the push button design engages and disengages the flip mount allowing the magnifier to lock in at your desired position.
  • The lens are fully multi-coated maximizing resolution, light gathering capability, and color fidelity. Eye Relief-2.2 inches. Field of View-38.2 feet/100 yards

Image is three times (3x) larger than without the magnifier. The red dot magnifier measures 4.3-inches (10.75cm), extending your sight by the same length.

In the end the whole setup is not nearly as compact as a single-piece sight. Withstanding recoil with a modular setup can be a bit problematic.

But the benefits outweigh the setbacks.

Size of the tube is 30mm. With a larger optic, you get clearer, brighter and crispier images, because resolution has increased by a big margin.

Field of view is generous: 38.2 feet at 100-yards. While you may have to close one eye to aim your sight, a wider field of view at a greater range is a big advantage.

You can position yourself at a longer distance, and you don’t have to worry about game spotting you.

What’s more awesome about the magnifier is that you can focus an image to achieve sharpness. By rotating the focus know, you’re able to achieve a suitable resolution at the range.

What you lose, though, is infinite eye relief. Adding the magnifier to a red dot requires you to place your eye 2.2-inches from the ocular lens. Even with such a distance, you can be susceptible to recoil impacts.

Vortex was too aware of the recoil handling problems with a modular setup. That’s why they anodized the aluminium chassis with a matte black finish, which, also, has anti-glare properties. No need to worry about flashing sights exposing your hiding position.

Covering the lenses fully are coatings to maximize light transfer. Therefore, in low- or bright-light conditions, the reticle of your red dot sight remains visible.

Filling up the single-piece main tube is purging of nitrogen, so your lenses won’t become foggy when temperature conditions change.

O-rings seals around the optics and dot-centering screws protect them from water, dust and debris.

Mounting and dismounting the flip-mount from the magnifier is straightforward, as all you need to do is to press the release button.

AR15 rifles and pistols are what Vortex built the magnifier for, as there are two mounting optics: absolute and 1/3 co-witness. As long you’ve an AR15 firearm, the magnifier mount can co-witness with its iron sights.

All you need to do once you mount the sight successfully on the rail base of your firearm is to center the image of the red dot. No need to sight in, as you’ve already done that with your red dot sight.

VMX-3T should come behind the ocular lens of your red dot sight – not in front of the objective lens of the sight.

On the top and side of the chassis are dot-centering screws for elevation and windage settings, respectively. Use them to center the red dot reticle inside the magnifier’s field of view.

If the reticle doesn’t align with center of the field of view, this shouldn’t be a cause for alarm. Whether the dot on- or off-center doesn’t affect the point-of-aim of the bullet.

Use the dot-centering screws for elevation on top of the main tube to move the reticle left and right as appropriate. Turn the screws until you feel resistance. Don’t turn them beyond that point.

The red dot reticle needn’t align perfectly with the center of the field of view of the magnifier, as that’s not necessary for accuracy.

As long as you zeroed or sighted in your red dot sight correctly, you don’t need to worry about alignment, as the point-of-impact of the bullet remains unchanged.

As long as you zeroed or sighted in your red dot sight correctly, you don’t need to worry about alignment, as the point-of-impact of the bullet remains unchanged.

If you don’t mind adding an extra ounce to increase magnification power for your longer-range needs, consider VMX 3T magnifier.

Weighing 11.9-ounces (0.34 kg), the magnifier is quite heavy as an addition to your hunting gear. Given its benefits, it’s a worthy addition; weight issues aside.

How to Mount Vortex VMX-3T Magnifier

How to Mount Vortex VMX-3T Magnifier

Tools you need

  • Available screws in the package
  • 3mm thick Shim plate (in case you want to increase mounting height to 1/3 co-witness)
  • Flip-mount

Clamp the Flip-mount to the VMX-3T Magnifier

  • Use the available screws to clamp the flip-mount to the magnifier
  • While you do that, ensure you face the release button and the ocular lens
  • Take note of the height of iron sights from the rail base to the optics center
  • You don’t need to add the spacer, shim or riser if the height of the iron sight is 37mm
  • If you want to increase the height to 1/3 co-witness (40mm) up from the absolute co-witness, add the 3mm thick shim plate between the flip-mount and the magnifier. You’d need to press the release button, so the mount flips aside.

Given its affordable price range, Vortex VMX 3T magnifier is a useful addition to your hunting gear if you operate a tight budget, and red dots with variable magnification powers seem out of reach.

While extra weight may be a bit of a put-off, you benefit from a longer-range distance, a wider field of view and more resolution than using a red dot sight without a magnifier.

Adding a magnifier reintroduces the need for eye relief, so you lose the privilege of infinite eye relief. With the magnifier, you need to position your eye 2.2-inches from the ocular lens of the magnifier.

Given that a safe distance is at least 4-inches or more away from the ocular lens, you become more susceptible to have your eye knocked by an impact and shock of recoils.

All-in-all, the magnifier remains an awesome product, as superior optics, anodized chassis and resistance to weather elements, give you an edge.
